Supporting their peers

Hannah Bibby is a senior Registered Nurse, working in the Emergency Department at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital for the past nine years.

A year ago, the opportunity came up for her to undertake training to become a Peer Supporter at Central Adelaide Local Health Network.

What is a Peer Supporter?

Our peer supporters are an informal, supportive, non-judgemental and confidential ear when staff need to talk.

For staff who may be going through a rough time at work or at home, our Peer Supporters are an approachable person who you can pull aside to talk to. Additionally, staff can refer other colleagues who they are worried about but don’t feel confident pulling them aside to see how they’re going.

“When I did the training a year ago, I had no idea that I was at the start of my journey of being catapulted into the wellbeing space for CALHN staff.,” Hannah said.

“Some of my colleagues and I have now created a Wellness Team for TQEH ED and we regularly discuss implementing new ideas, setting up wellbeing days and fun/positive opportunities for staff.

Hannah and her team have hosted wellbeing days which include food (always a winner with staff), professional massages, painting, themed challenges and puppy cuddles to name a few.

“There are always simple ways you can introduce a bit of positivity into your workplace. One of my favourite examples is encouraging staff to wear brightly coloured scrubs on Fun Scrubs Friday and Wellbeing Wednesdays. It puts a smile on everyone’s face, including the patients!”

In October, they had 70 ED staff members take part in the Billion Steps Challenge. Staff were split into two teams: Hannah’s Hurricanes and (Dr Anu) Duncan’s Donuts. The challenge encouraged some friendly competition, boosted staff morale and motivation to get moving.

The Department also managed to complete over 19 million steps!

“Introducing a wellbeing strategy into your department starts with leadership. I’m grateful to have leaders who have taken the time to listen and run with our ideas and programs,” she said.
