Professor Toby Coates and Professor Donald Howie have been recognised in this year’s Queen’s Birthday 2021 Honours for their formidable services to medicine.
Both Professor Coates and Professor Howie were appointed as officers in the General Division of the Order of Australia (AO) for their world-class care in South Australia, and the international medical community, as part of the 2021 Queen’s Birthday List.
Professor Toby Coates
Professor Coates has been honoured for his distinguished service to renal medicine, to professional medical organisations, and to tertiary education. Toby is currently the Director of Kidney and Islet Transplantation at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and The Queen Elizabeth Hospital sites as part of the Central Northern Adelaide Renal and Transplantation Service.
His award recognises his world-class career requisites which also includes serving as president of the Transplantation Society of Australia and New Zealand, co-chairing the COVID-19 National Transplantation and Donation Rapid Response Taskforce, and is the founder of Kidney, Transplant and Diabetes Research Australia
“I am honoured to be recognised like this — essentially you are doing your job but as other people nominate you, clearly there are people who think you are doing a good job,” Professor Coates said.
Professor Donald Howie
Professor Howie was also Clinical Director of the Royal Adelaide Hospital Orthopaedic and Trauma Service between 1988 – 2020 and was honoured for his distinguished service to medicine in the field of orthopaedics, and to professional medical organisations.
As a consultant orthopaedic surgeon since 1987, Prof Howie has an international appreciation as leading senior surgeon and scientist, who specialised in joint replacement, complex revisions and hip reconstruction in young patients and was co-founder of the Australian National Joint Replacement Registry and foundation president of the Australian Arthroplasty Society.
Professor Howie is now Head of the University of Adelaide Discipline of Orthopaedics and Trauma and Co-Clinical Director of the Centre for Orthopaedic and Trauma Research at the University of Adelaide.
